On Friday the thirteenth, several HIPP volunteers joined forces with HHLT stewards to oversee a planned burn of the accumulated brush at Curtis Farm Preserve. For the last few seasons, HIPP has worked in an area north of the preserve’s parking area near Williams Field. The brush pile had grown to a substantial size, so it was time to burn it down. Curtis Farm steward Craig Douglas is also a volunteer firefighter at Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue. Craig arranged the burn date, provided a truck from HNFR and supervised the extinguishing blasts of water to put all the remaining embers out when the brush had burned down.
Besides Craig, stewardship volunteers Ron Davis and Tom Carr were on site, with HIPP represented by Don Westfall, Greg Braun and Dennis Wilkins. Thanks to Greg for some great photos of the morning’s event. HIPP volunteers will begin a new brush pile on Saturday, October 21 when the work continues to open the area near the old farm foundation north of the parking area off Route 123. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to lend a hand.
