Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association reminds us all not to include invasive plant materials in our holiday decor. Some invasive plants, including bittersweet and multiflora rose, may be used in holiday wreaths and garlands. Purchasing decorations made with such plants poses a threat to Maine’s ecosystem and wildlife. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry encourages individuals to check their decorations before purchasing to help mitigate the spread of harmful invasives. Wreaths should not be sold in the state if they contain any of the plants listed on the DACF’s “Do Not Sell Plant List.” These species should also not be used in your own wreath-making — placing decorations made with invasives outside or composting them can result in spreading the invasive plant or its seeds. Try substituting native winterberry or holly in your decorations for some holiday cheer.
