Robert Bryan, a Maine licensed forester and ecologist based in Harpswell, will lead a winter walk of Curtis Farm Preserve to demonstrate how to identify invasive plants based on their winter characteristics. The walk is scheduled for 10:00 AM March 20, 2025 with a rain date of March 22, 2025. The address of Curtis Farm Preserve is 1554 Harpswell Neck Rd, Harpswell, ME 04079.
Even the most experienced plant experts will rely on visual cues typical during growing seasons when invasive plants may be hard to reach, obscured, or hidden completely by other dense foliage. Being able to identify invasive plants in the winter offers an opportunity to add a fourth season to invasive plant eradication efforts.
Mr. Bryan has a Masters of Science degree in Forestry from the University of Vermont, and has many years of experience with forest management and conservation. He worked at Maine Audubon as a forest and wetlands habitat ecologist for 13 years, has served on various technical committees throughout his career, is a published author, and consults with diverse projects for an array of commercial interests and private landowners. Mr. Bryan has been a Harpswell resident since 1996, has served on the board of the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust, prepared forest management plans for two HHLT preserves, conducts ecological assessments on potential conservation properties of interest to HHLT, and volunteers as a preserve steward.
